Description

Emancipatory immersion, developed in the CSCL field by Enyedy and Yoon, is the concept the authors use to interpret how students meaningfully related to the VR stories. Quoting the concept's originators: "we can develop a critical consciousness that promotes epistemological curiosity taking ownership of one's own constructed world." The article stresses it is not about fully identifying with others but about taking part in situations where others' experiences are taken seriously and invited into reflection on one's own lifeworld. The study's four dimensions are presented as manifestations of emancipatory immersion in reflective dialogue.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A VR environment presenting personal stories about exclusion and discrimination.
  • Collaborative reflective dialogues after the VR experience in which immersion experiences can be expressed, since one of these reflections occurs only in the dialogues themselves.

Constraints

  • The article explicitly does not interpret emancipatory immersion as becoming someone else or fully understanding the experiences of the people met in the VR environment.

Target Learners

  • upper secondary students

Learning Goals

  • developing critical consciousness about exclusion and discrimination
  • reflecting on how discrimination penetrates students' own lifeworlds
