Embedded high-dosage tutoring pattern: small ratios, in-schedule sessions, and classroom-aligned sequencing¶
Design · All designs
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The Saga approach instantiates a high-dosage tutoring design in which tutoring is "embedded in students' regular school schedules", occurs at least three times weekly for 90 minutes, uses small tutor-to-student ratios (1:2 to 1:4 traditional; up to 1:8 blended with ALEKS), and trails classroom instruction by 2-3 days to reinforce learning and address gaps. Program strategies are adjusted using assessment data, observations, survey feedback, and progress-monitoring tools.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Minimum three sessions per week totaling 90 minutes, scheduled within the school day
- Small tutor-to-student ratios per session (3-8 students depending on model)
- Weekly alignment meetings between tutor supervisors and primary math teachers
Constraints¶
- Must remain supplemental so it does not displace Tier 1 instruction or other responsibilities
Target Learners¶
- High school students at risk of dropping out in high-poverty schools
Learning Goals¶
- Mathematics achievement, course grades, and course passing
