Description¶
The outcome of the bootstrapping process was a diagnostic computer-based task for investigating mathematical thinking, in which pupils solve provided puzzles using provided equalities to transform an arithmetical sum into its answer. The software was programmed in Imagine Logo, which "lends itself to the fast proto-typing of microworlds". Implementation occurred rapidly and little re-programming or debugging has proved necessary despite substantial trialing in a variety of primary schools.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Two keypads for entering notation, based on the Equivalence Calculator
- Researcher (R) interventions as a central element of the task
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- Year 5 pupils
Learning Goals¶
- distinguishing compositional, commutative and partitional notation
Claims¶
Related Designs¶
- Expression-transformation puzzle: match a starting expression to an equivalent target form via valid operations
- Before-the-problem complete worked examples for a game-based puzzle task
