Description¶
Kühn's (2000) three-step model holds that vocabulary exercises should proceed in three steps: "The first step is receptive vocabulary practice, which involves understanding and explaining words with different semantization techniques", followed by reflective practice (notation, gathering, linking, ordering of words) and productive practice, "which involves the use of the vocabulary in appropriate texts and situations". The model follows three principles: success measured by learner output, functional orientation toward writing and/or speaking competence, and textual orientation. The present study operationalizes its third step as text production and tests its retention effects.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Vocabulary work must be anchored in texts so lexical means can be observed in authentic usage contexts and used in learners' own text production
Constraints¶
- The article notes the model itself has not received much attention and is still in its infancy
Target Learners¶
- adult foreign-language learners of German (GFL)
Learning Goals¶
- vocabulary retention
- writing and speaking competence in a foreign language
Claims¶
- Text Production Improves Short Term Vocabulary Retention [+M]
- Text Production Improves Medium Term Vocabulary Retention [+M]
- Text Production No Significant Long Term Vocabulary Retention [-M]
