Description¶
The article adopts Markham et al.'s (2003) characterization of project-based learning as a design with six aspects: "authentic, real-world challenges", rigorous academics, applying learning with high-performance skills, active exploration, interacting and making adult connections, and formal and informal assessment practices. It pairs this with PBL activities of investigating questions, proposing hypotheses and explanations, discussing ideas, and developing solutions or outcomes, and instantiates it in a statistics project on collecting and presenting school data.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Projects must present authentic real-world problems, here a video scenario of collecting and presenting school data for a building decision
Constraints¶
- The article reports the pattern implemented only for a grade-seven statistics topic over two months
Target Learners¶
- lower secondary (grade seven) mathematics students aged 12-13
Learning Goals¶
- statistics data collection and presentation (line graphs, bar charts, pie charts)
- problem solving and collaboration skills
Claims¶
- Pbl Higher Statistics Outcomes Than Conventional [+M]
- Pbl Statistics Student Activity Effective [+M]
Related Designs¶
- Problem Based Learning
