Description¶
The authors report that their efforts to increase science communication with educators "have included workshops", through which they engage educators in conversation about implementing retrieval practice. These workshops are the setting in which the three recurring concerns about workload, scope of usefulness, and test anxiety surfaced, and in which the authors attempted to address them by discussing nuances of the retrieval practice literature. The article describes the workshops as the experiential basis for its commentary.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Face-to-face or interactive conversation with educators so that concerns can surface and be discussed

Target Learners¶
- Educators (teachers and instructors) learning about retrieval practice
Learning Goals¶
- Understanding and implementing retrieval practice effectively in teaching
Claims¶
- Three concerns about retrieval practice implementation consistently arise during educators' workshop conversations: workload, perceived restriction to basic knowledge, and test anxiety [+W]
- The three named educator concerns are time or workload of planning, enacting, and evaluating retrieval practice; perceived usefulness limited to basic knowledge; and test anxiety [+W]
