Description

The SCL model is a teaching approach that "is a combination of seminar and case-based learning." It integrates "the efficient communication of seminar learning and the clinical thinking of case-based learning." In practice, a teacher selects a typical authentic case and distributes anonymized patient information to students before class. Students independently prepare responses, then during class the teacher gives a brief lecture, introduces the case, and facilitates group analysis and open seminar discussion.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Teachers require extensive medical knowledge, strong teaching skills, and experience to facilitate discussions and manage classroom interactions.

Constraints

  • Double-blinding is not possible because teachers must implement different teaching methods across conditions.

Target Learners

  • Undergraduate medical students
  • Postgraduate medical students

Learning Goals

  • Clinical thinking
  • Theoretical knowledge
  • Case analysis
  • Clinical skills
