Description

The article develops a teaching model whose pre-implementation preparation stage "consists of 7 steps": identifying which astronomy concepts students know in sign language, deciding how concepts will be added in sign language, selecting activities, choosing methods and media, allocating time, specifying cognitive process skills, and selecting and training teachers. The model was implemented as a 7-day project combining a basic astronomy theme and a seasons theme, using experiments, videos, modeling, a planetarium and outdoor observation. The author offers it so other researchers can use the activities and test the model.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Sign language about the subject should be developed first, and conceptual learning and teaching sign language should be simultaneous
  • Teachers require in-service training about the activities before the project starts

Constraints

  • The model was tried with a single group of 30 deaf students without a control group, and the author recommends control-group studies to assess it better

Target Learners

  • deaf students aged 11-18

Learning Goals

  • astronomy concepts such as solar system, eclipses, scale and axial tilt
  • scientific process skills such as observing, measuring and inferring
