Description¶
The study draws on the SGAV method, which the article says "concentrates on learning verbal language" and rests on two essential principles. The structuro-global aspect holds that learners need both linguistic elements (vocabulary, grammar) and non-linguistic elements (rhythm, stress, gestures, facial expressions) for learning to occur. The audio-visual aspect seeks "simultaneous presentation of voice and image in order to facilitate the comprehension of message". In this study the first aspect was fulfilled through video pronunciations and the second through written transcripts of those pronunciations, though the author modified SGAV's usual priority of spoken language by using spoken and written language simultaneously.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Provision of the learner with both linguistic and non-linguistic elements
- Simultaneous presentation of voice and image
Constraints¶
- The research modified SGAV's characteristic priority of spoken language by opting for simultaneous utilisation of spoken and written language
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate and graduate foreign language students at C1 level
Learning Goals¶
- foreign language vocabulary learning and retention
Claims¶
- Learners taught with the audiovisual method showed higher vocabulary retention in week two than learners taught with the conventional method [+W]
- Learners taught French vocabulary with an audiovisual method (listening to video pronunciation while following the written script) achieved higher learning success rates in week one than learners taught with the conventional method [+W]
