Description¶
Drawing on fifteen years of SLO practice and research, the report holds that the value of Student Learning Objectives lies in the deliberative process rather than the compliance artifact: "The process of thinking through the inter-related components of the SLO and their implications for instruction is what matters most." The SLO process should foster planning and delivery of instruction through data use and systematic analysis, and motivate performance through growth targets set by both teachers and students. Districts must balance manageability with rigor and standardization with customization, and would benefit from state guidance on how much flexibility schools may use while preserving comparability and trust.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Districts must strike a thoughtful balance between manageability and a thorough, rigorous process, and between standardization and customization
Constraints¶
- The report presents this as a national lesson from fifteen years of SLO practice and research rather than a finding tested within this study's own data
Target Learners¶
- K-12 teachers and principals developing and implementing SLOs
Learning Goals¶
- Instructional planning and delivery informed by data, and student growth through teacher- and student-set targets
