Description¶
The structural method of teaching vocabulary is an approach based on "the morphological analyses of the word", breaking words into prefixes, root and suffixes to illustrate meanings. Students analyze the word rather than the sentence, generate new words from the root form (for example forming adjectives and adverbs from nouns or verbs), and act as partners who manage their own learning, with the teacher as facilitator. In this study it was operationalized in 20 validated lesson plans and contrasted with the definitional method of looking up meanings in a dictionary or glossary or drill.
