Description¶
A self-study activity administered as an extra-credit assignment in which "The study design consisted of three phases completed over one week". In Phase 1 students posed a variation of a recitation problem with a Gen AI platform of their choosing and reflected on the interaction with six guided questions; in Phase 2 they watched a 15-minute training video on Gen AI and prompt engineering; in Phase 3 they repeated the task using what they learned and answered additional reflection questions on training and willingness to continue. Students submitted their Gen AI conversations as data.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- access to a Gen AI platform of the student's choosing
- completion of the training video before Phase 3
Constraints¶
- administered as an extra-credit assignment in an online summer course, which the authors note may have skewed participation toward more agreeable views
Target Learners¶
- prospective engineering majors in first-semester calculus-based physics
Learning Goals¶
- problem posing as a self-study technique
- effective prompting of Gen AI
Claims¶
- Students hold generally positive attitudes toward Gen AI-assisted problem posing, with a minority mixed or negative [+W]
- Positive perceptions of training and of the technique largely co-occurred across the two themes [+W]
- A majority of physics students (76%) perceived a positive change in their Gen AI interactions after prompt-engineering training [+W]
Related Designs¶

- Three-phase practicum e-mentoring cycle: pre-practicum preparation, during-practicum supported practice, post-practicum reflection
