Description¶
Discrepant events are demonstrations, observations, or scenarios that violate learner expectations in a noticeable way. They are useful when the instructional goal is to provoke rethinking, explanation, and conceptual change.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- An event that clearly contradicts an expected outcome
- A follow-up prompt that asks learners to explain the mismatch
Constraints¶
- Without debrief, surprise alone may entertain more than teach
Target Learning Goals¶
- Surface misconceptions and create readiness for explanation revision.
Affordances¶
Claims¶
- External disequilibrium level systematically influences subsequent changes in internal disequilibrium: discrepant conditions increase mixture among low mix subjects and decrease it among high mix subjects [~W]
- Eleven-month-old infants learn a new object-sound mapping after a surprising core knowledge violation but not after an expected outcome [+W]
- Infants' exploratory behavior after a core knowledge violation is tailored to the type of violation seen [+W]
- Discrepant peer feedback leads to more transitions between feedback and essay, but only for students who report the discrepancy afterwards [~W]

Patterns That Use This Element¶
Examples¶
- A science demonstration that produces a result opposite to what learners predicted.
