Description¶
Peer assessment is the element in which learners evaluate the work or reasoning of peers against shared criteria. It is useful when the goal is both better feedback for the work and stronger learner judgment about quality.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Clear criteria or rubric
- Norms for constructive, evidence-based feedback
Constraints¶
- Peers may need support to assess reliably and productively
Target Learning Goals¶
- Improve evaluative judgment, feedback literacy, and revision quality.
Affordances¶
Claims¶
- Peer Feedback Improves Writing [+M]
- Peer assessment improves academic performance by a small average amount relative to no assessment or to teacher assessment [+M]
- In two online comparisons, a rubric changed what peer reviewers commented on (one study) and helped peer raters place writing in quality tiers, most for complex criteria (the other); the first study says the rubric restrained reflective thinking [+M]
- The quality of feedback students give peers predicts gains in their own work, but no recorded study isolates a causal benefit of the assessor role [+M]
- In two secondary-school writing studies, peer reviewers' own performance predicted how helpful their feedback was but not how accurately it identified problems [~M]
- Peer and self-assessment both show significant effects on academic performance with no significant difference between their impacts [+W]
- Proposition 2: mutual evaluation emphasizing reasons and responsive comparison will improve evaluative judgment more than unexplained self-rating [+W]
- Participating in peer assessment causes a small but significant improvement in short-term achievement on unit quizzes in a college statistics course [+W] — attached 2026-10-15 from Sun DL et al. (2015), which proposed "Online homework platform enabling anonymized peer assessment distribution and in-class randomized experiments".
- Cognitive feedback benefits assessors rather than assessees, and weak students do not benefit from receiving more feedback [~W]
- Giving feedback that identifies problems in peers' work is a significant predictor of assessors' own project performance [+W]
- Giving suggestions to peers is a significant predictor of assessors' own project performance [+W]
- Students rated peers' work from their own country 3.6% higher than work from elsewhere [~W]
- Peers slightly under-mark their comrades' papers while self-assessors over-mark their own [~W]
- Peer grading behaviors do not significantly predict project performance for assessors or assessees [-W]
The evidence by question¶
- Should learners assess each other's work, and does it need a rubric or script? Peer assessment improves academic performance by a small average amount relative to no assessment or to teacher assessment [+M]
- How accurately do learners judge work, and what does the accuracy of their judgments depend on? In two secondary-school writing studies, peer reviewers' own performance predicted how helpful their feedback was but not how accurately it identified problems [~M]
- Does the learner doing the assessing learn from it, as well as the learner being assessed? The quality of feedback students give peers predicts gains in their own work, but no recorded study isolates a causal benefit of the assessor role [+M]

Patterns That Use This Element¶
Examples¶
- Learners score peer work with a rubric and justify their ratings.
- Moodle Workshop module: Moodle's Workshop activity, which distributes submissions for anonymous peer and teacher marking against a scheme
- iLAP (Interactive Learning and Assessment Platform): a platform for assignment submission, rubric-based peer assessment and performance monitoring
