Description¶
The CoI Survey, developed by Arbaugh et al., measures students’ perceptions of teaching, social, and cognitive presence, while the Garrison and Akyol metacognition questionnaire measures self-regulation and co-regulation.
Components¶
- CoI Survey and metacognition questionnaire instruments for measuring presences and metacognition: The study used two validated survey instruments: the 34-item CoI Survey (Arbaugh et al., 2008) measuring teaching, social, and cognitive presence on five-point Likert scales, and the 26-item metacognition questionnaire (Garrison & Akyol, 2015) measuring self-regulation and co-regulation. "The CoI survey was developed by Arbaugh et al. (2008) to measure students' perception of teaching presence (TP), social presence (SP), and cognitive presence (CP)." In this study the instruments showed generally satisfactory reliability, with Cronbach's alpha of .96 for the CoI survey and .93 for the metacognition questionnaire. (Sadaf et al. (2022))
Claims¶
- In an online case-based course, students perceive cognitive presence as highest and least variable, and teaching presence as the most variable, among the CoI presences and metacognition dimensions [+W]
- CoI survey ratings reveal uneven presence profiles: course organization and exploration rated highest while most facilitation items and three cognitive-presence items (curiosity, reflection, testing and applying knowledge) rated below 4.0 [+W]
- Students in an accelerated online MBA program experience their courses as a community of inquiry, with all three CoI presences rated above 4.0 on a 5-point scale [+W]
- Self-regulation and co-regulation are significantly and highly correlated in an online case-based course [+W]
