Description¶
The Cultivate Survey is a twice-yearly anonymous student survey developed by the University of Chicago Consortium on School Research to measure classroom learning conditions in grades 5–12.
Components¶
- Cultivate student experience survey and reporting site: Cultivate is a student experience survey developed by the UChicago Consortium's Learning & Development Group, administered districtwide in CPS since fall 2022 to students in grades 5-12 twice a school year about one of their core subject classes. It asks students about nine classroom learning conditions and their own learning strategies and beliefs. The reporting site provides school-level reports depicting responses to each learning condition, an ordering of weakest to strongest conditions, changes over time, and disaggregation by grade level, subject area, or student demographics. Data is schoolwide and shared first with school leaders, and does not identify individual teachers and classro (Faye Kroshinsky et al. (2026))
- Cultivate framework of nine classroom learning conditions plus learning strategies and beliefs: The Cultivate survey is organized around a research-based framework of nine classroom learning conditions—such as Student Voice, Supportive Teaching, and Classroom Community—each accompanied by a guide outlining the principles underlying the condition, research background, practice ideas, scripted activities, reflection questions, and additional resources. Alongside the learning conditions, the survey measures student self-reflections on their own learning strategies and learning beliefs (such as Belonging and Agency) in the context of the same core class. The framework positions survey systems as practical, actionable, and catalytic tools within a comprehensive approach to understanding and (Faye Kroshinsky et al. (2026))
