Description¶
Ecolab is a software learning environment developed by Rosemary Luckin and collaborators for children to explore ecological relationships through interactive modelling and graduated support.
Components¶
- Ecolab software learning environment: The Ecolab is a software environment with an underlying design metaphor of an Ecology Laboratory into which children aged 9-11 place organisms and explore food-web relationships. It operates in build and run modes, offers four phases of relationship complexity, and provides World, Web and Energy views. The system scaffolds learners through graded help and adjustable activity difficulty, and Ecolab II adds metacognitive scaffolding for planning and help-seeking skills. (Luckin (2003))
Claims¶
- Children who interacted with multiple complexity phases and completed above-average actions were far more likely to achieve above-average learning gains [+W]
- In the Ecolab II evaluation, less able learners made the greatest learning gains [+W]
- Less able and less knowledgeable learners are ineffective at selecting challenging tasks and seeking support [+W]
- VIS version of Ecolab produced greatest average improvement in test scores but was not most successful for all ability groups [+W]
- Matching system goal-orientation feedback to child's goal orientation may improve learning gains [+W]
- Goal orientation affects children's help-seeking behaviour in Ecolab II [+W]
