Description¶
ENGAGE is a Unity-based game learning environment that teaches computational thinking to middle school students through an immersive underwater storyworld, visual programming tasks, and progressive challenge levels.
Components¶
- ENGAGE game-based learning environment for middle school computational thinking: ENGAGE is a game-based learning environment built with the Unity engine that introduces computational thinking to middle school students (ages 11-13) through an immersive 3D underwater storyworld. Students program devices with a visual block-based language to solve computational challenges across three levels (Introductory, Digital World, Big Data). The Digital World level's binary lock and lift tasks, in which students flip binary tiles to generate target base-ten values, supplied the behavior trace data for this study. (Akram et al. (2017))
Claims¶
- Students showed significant content-knowledge gains from pre-test to post-test after the Digital World level [+M]
- Situated, task-based and game-based learning were the most used strategies in VR/AR-supported K-12 STEM learning [+W]
