Description¶
A set of early group-administered school assessments measuring primary-grade intelligence, class mental status and educational attainments, and seventh-grade subject attainments.
Components¶
- New group tests presented at the 1920 Chicago meetings: Kingsbury pictorial primary scale, Pintner combined mental-educational survey test, and Pressey seventh-grade attainment scale: The report describes three newly devised instruments. Kingsbury's group intelligence scale for the primary grades is "pictorial in character and involving no reading, writing, or complicated drawing" and yielded an average correlation of +0.69 with Stanford-Binet mental age of 1300 primary pupils. Pintner's combined mental-educational test, standardized on 4300 cases, affords a measure of class mental status and evaluates attainments in terms of ability to profit by instruction. Pressey presented a scale measuring seventh-grade attainments in history, reading vocabulary, English composition, and arithmetical reasoning, the composition part scored by children's judgments of compositions of known value. (Gates (1921))
Claims¶
- A Difference score comparing educational and mental index values diagnoses whether a child's attainment is commensurate with measured ability, with Differences between minus 8 and plus 8 occurring in about half of cases [+W]
- Against Stanford Binet criteria for 300 grade 3–6 children, the mental index correlated .47, the educational index .52, crude score with mental age .80, mental with educational index .62, and Difference with I.Q. .21 [+W]
- For schools, where the Difference derives from median indices, the middle 50 per cent of 56 tested schools fell within plus 3 to minus 3, making school differences beyond 3 significant [+W]
- Cases with Differences of minus 9 or below — 21.5 per cent of the standardization sample — are described as marked cases of wasted intelligence whose ability is not being utilized [+W]
