Description¶
PeerWise is a freely available online tool developed at the University of Auckland that enables students to author, answer, rate, comment on, and follow peers' multiple-choice questions.
Components¶
- PeerWise online tool for student-authored multiple-choice question repositories: PeerWise is the technology platform used in this study's interventions. The article describes it as "a freely-available, online tool to facilitate cohorts of students writing their own MCQs and answering and commenting on those of their peers", incorporating social functionality such as rating, commenting and following contributors. Developed at the University of Auckland, at the time of writing it had nearly 100,000 student registrants, around 600,000 questions and approximately 12 million answers. (Bates et al. (2013))
Claims¶
- 75% of student-authored physics questions met combined high-quality criteria (clear, correct, plausible distractors, above recall, adequate explanation) [+M]
- Explanation-quality distributions differed significantly between years for Physics 1A (2011 slightly lower) but not Physics 1B [+W]
- Student-authored physics questions mostly require application or analysis, with under 5% at the lowest recall level [+M]
- Over 95% of student-authored questions included an explanation, mostly of good or excellent quality [+M]
- Students answer lower-taxonomy-category questions more frequently, but only by a factor of about 2 [+W]
