Description¶
Project On-Track is a technology-supported, high-dosage small-group literacy tutoring programme for grades 1–3, run by participating schools in northeastern Tennessee using Amplify Reading mCLASS resources.
Components¶
- Project On-Track high-dosage small-group literacy tutoring program with Amplify Reading mCLASS intervention: Project On-Track is a technology-supported, small-group tutoring intervention for grade 1–3 students in northeastern Tennessee, launched in 2021. All schools maintain 1:3 tutor–student ratios, 30-minute sessions at least twice weekly for at least 12 weeks a semester, and use the mCLASS intervention component of Amplify Reading, which "draws on data from regular progress monitoring to generate customized tutoring lessons that are highly structured and prescribed." mCLASS has three components: the DIBELS assessment, supports for tutor-delivered small-group instruction, and an online platform with reading games. (Pilchen et al. (2024))
Claims¶
- Slightly fewer than half (42 percent) of students who started the year in the at risk DIBELS category moved to a lower risk category after a full year of Project On-Track tutoring [+W]
- Among students who started the year most at risk for reading difficulties, none of the three implementation features (timing, frequency, tutor qualifications) was associated with end-of-year literacy progress [~W]
- Rural schools were far more likely than nonrural schools to offer Project On-Track tutoring during school only [~W]
- Timing of tutoring was significantly associated with tutor qualifications and with student grade level and baseline risk [~W]
- Sites offering tutoring during school were much more likely than out-of-school-hours sites to offer tutoring more than twice a week [~W]
- Schools using only teachers, administrators, or paraprofessionals as tutors were more likely to serve students with higher baseline DIBELS scores [~W]
