Description¶
The Student Momentum Indicator is a grounded-theory metric defined as "the percent of students enrolled in the course who finished", calculated after each lesson as M = (total enrolled - dropouts remaining after the lesson) / total enrolled. Graphed across lessons, M traces the course's completion trajectory, rising toward 100% as remaining dropouts are exhausted. The authors developed it after their Tipping Point hypothesis failed, using constant comparison of graphs from 196 courses, and position it as a design tool for pinpointing where students lose momentum.
Accounts¶
- The Student Momentum Indicator (M): a lesson-by-lesson completion trajectory metric for online courses: The Student Momentum Indicator is a grounded-theory metric defined as "the percent of students enrolled in the course who finished", calculated after each lesson as M = (total enrolled - dropouts remaining after the lesson) / total enrolled. (Steven S. Christensen et al. (2016))
Claims¶
- A single Tipping Point explains dropout patterns in only about a quarter of online courses, so lesson-level dropout behavior is more complex than one critical lesson [+M]
- Graphing the Student Momentum Indicator across lessons yields nine dropout-behavior shape categories, with steep wall shapes the most common (25.5%) and flat slope shapes rare (2.6%) [+M]
- Student Momentum graph shapes differ markedly by subject area, with math courses predominantly convex slope and political science courses predominantly steep wall [+W]
