Description

An adapted version of the baseline 4C/ID-based online learning environment for research skills in which "need support consisted of 12 implementations (four implementations for each need), based on existing research on need support". Autonomy support included meaningful rationales, acknowledging negative feelings, inviting language and self-pacing; competence support included structure, informational positive feedback, progress indication and criteria-based evaluation; relatedness support included researcher-mentor messages, forum sharing and a personal welcome (Tables 1-2).

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Must build on a deliberately designed 4C/ID-based environment, which the authors call an important prerequisite to provide qualitative motivational support

Constraints

  • Ideally students work in class under teacher supervision, but COVID-19 restrictions meant some students completed modules partly at home

Target Learners

  • 11th and 12th grade upper secondary behavioral sciences students

Learning Goals

  • research skills in behavioral sciences (formulating research questions, methods, hypotheses, communication)
