Description¶
A web-based intelligent tutoring system developed for postgraduate learners studying PHP, providing exercises, Bayesian student modelling, adaptive exercise selection, and four levels of error-focused help.
Components¶
- PHP Intelligent Tutoring System with web interface and four-level help system: The PHP ITS is a web-based tutoring system containing 27 exercises covering 34 topics. Students select exercises, enter solutions, and receive feedback. If incorrect, students can request "four further levels of help regarding the error" — two levels of 'What is wrong?' and two of 'How do I fix it?'. A Bayesian Belief Network student model tracks topic-level knowledge and suggests the next best exercise based on Zone of Proximal Development principles. (Weragama et al. (2014))
Claims¶
- The final PHP ITS version correctly analysed 96.31% of student solutions to programming exercises [+W]
- Per-exercise analysis accuracy improved from 15 of 27 exercises above 80% to all 27 above 80% in the third version [+W]
- Two main causes of incorrect analysis were unhandled constructs and string-literal quote inconsistencies [~W]
