Description¶
Reading Recovery is a one-to-one early-literacy tutoring programme for low-achieving first-grade readers, delivered by specially trained teachers through daily individual lessons and progress monitoring.
Components¶
- Reading Recovery daily 30-minute individual tutoring lessons: Reading Recovery provides the lowest-achieving first-grade students "daily 30-minute lessons" delivered individually by specially trained teachers. Lessons combine "fluency instruction, letter and word identification skills, phonemic and orthographic awareness instruction," reading a new challenging book with scaffolded support, and daily progress monitoring of independent oral reading. Students either reach average reading and writing levels within 20 weeks or are referred for additional testing and possible more intensive placement. (Reading Recovery (2020))
- Reading Recovery® one-on-one tailored tutoring program for grade 1 students with low literacy achievement: Reading Recovery® is a supplemental intervention providing daily 30-minute one-on-one tutoring to grade 1 students with low literacy achievement over 12 to 20 weeks. The report describes it as "tailoring the content of each lesson to each student based on observations and analyses of the student strengths and weaknesses from prior lessons." Trained teachers incorporate instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing, oral language, and motivation depending on student needs. No lesson plans are provided; teachers use Reading Recovery® forms to record observations and design individualized daily lessons. (Reading Recovery®)
- Reading Recovery one-on-one tutoring program for struggling first-grade readers: Reading Recovery is "a short-term intervention that provides one-on-one tutoring to first-grade students who are struggling in reading and writing." Trained teachers deliver daily 30-minute pull-out sessions over 12–20 weeks, tailoring individualized lessons to each student's needs and incorporating topics such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing, motivation, and oral language. Lessons are discontinued when students consistently read at the average level for their grade; students not reaching average performance after 20 weeks are referred for further evaluation. Teachers complete a 1-year university-based training program with ongoing professional dev (Reading Recovery® (2013))
- Daily assessment-driven one-on-one tutoring session with targeted, multisensory literacy components: Each daily 30-minute one-on-one session provides a balanced literacy block including fluency building, daily assessments, phonological awareness and word study, sentence writing, and vocabulary development. "Program components are targeted at individual student needs," and tutors "use daily assessments to inform daily instruction within a sequential framework." Components are also multisensory, "incorporating visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile teaching methods." (Reading Go! (formerly Reading Rescue) (2021))
- Interactive individualized lesson structure combining reading, letter/word work, and story writing: Each Reading Recovery lesson follows a recurring structure: "reading familiar or novel stories, manipulating letters and words, and writing and assembling stories." Lessons are "interactive between the teacher and student, with the teacher carefully monitoring each student's reading behavior," and teachers tailor instruction to accommodate each student's needs. This pattern combines text reading, orthographic work, and composing within a single one-on-one session, with continuous teacher observation guiding what each lesson contains. (Reading Recovery® (2013))
- Reading Recovery training cascade: university-affiliated teacher training sites, teacher leaders, and certified teachers: Reading Recovery® sustains implementation through a three-level training infrastructure. Teacher training sites in public schools, affiliated with partnering universities, house teacher leaders who train teachers. Teacher leaders complete a yearlong training of graduate coursework and supervised practicums, and are expected to "provide initial training for up to 15 teacher candidates and provide ongoing support for 40 to 60 Reading Recovery® teachers or teachers in training annually." Teachers complete a yearlong graduate-credit training and must maintain registration by teaching at least eight students per year and participating in ongoing professional development.
