Description¶
VR-IWS is a wireless Meta Quest 2 application developed by Herrera et al. that implements the TEACCH individual work system for teacher-configured, hand-tracked independent practice by autistic learners.
Components¶
- Immersive VR implementation of the TEACCH individual work system (VR-IWS) with hand tracking and teacher customization: A standalone, wireless Meta Quest 2 implementation of the TEACCH individual work system comprising an input shelf, work table/area and output shelf, operated by students with their hands via hand tracking rather than controllers. Teachers configure sensory load, light-guided operation, error allowance and sessions, and can track progress. The software is "freely available in English, French, Spanish and Turkish". Four task types were implemented: moving balls, classifying objects by categories, associating objects by semantic fields, and half-and-half puzzles including simple mathematical operations. (Herrera et al. (2024))
Claims¶
- All 21 autistic students independently completed all 164 VR-IWS tasks offered across three countries [+M]
- Students rated the VR-IWS highly usable, with a mean SUS score of 85.36 [+M]
- Autistic children with intellectual disability scored significantly lower on task feasibility than children without intellectual disability [~M]
