Description

The GJCE guidelines organize global citizenship education around three intertwined domains: knowledge, attitude and values, and a pedagogical approach. Knowledge means that "Knowledge provides the basis for insight into global justice issues and their root causes", with deep knowledge built from a focus on one global issue, historical insight, and local–global relationships. Attitude and values cover ethical and intercultural sensitivity, contact with people from different backgrounds, and critical reflection on mainstream thinking. The pedagogical approach centers on experiential learning in civic contexts. The authors used the guidelines both to analyze the SIS course program and to structure the case study's outcome measures.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Spend at least 15 h in civic contexts
  • Focus on one global-justice issue with historical insight into root causes and local–global connections
  • Develop ethical and intercultural sensitivity and critically reflect on mainstream thinking

Constraints

  • The guidelines were developed simultaneously but largely independently of the SIS course, so the case study could not fully assess their value for preparing students for global justice citizenship
  • The SIS course lacked deep knowledge of one issue, historical insight into root causes, and critical reflection on mainstream values, and was characterized as soft rather than critical global citizenship

Target Learners

  • Undergraduate honors students in higher education

Learning Goals

  • Ethical and intercultural sensitivity
  • Insight into root causes of global justice issues
  • Motivation and possibilities to take action for a more just society
