Description¶
The OD3R method is a student-centered instructional method for biochemistry consisting of five stages: orientation to generate motivation, developing/designing the investigation, conducting the investigation, reporting and discussing results, and reflecting on learning. The article states it "consists of 5 stages that integrate learning implementation and laboratory works; integrating assessments on cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains". It was applied to a biochemistry course on qualitative and quantitative analysis of proteins over 2-4 weeks with 2 meetings per week.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Observers trained to use evaluation instruments assess student activities, with each observer assigned to keep track of 10 students
Constraints¶
- The article states that to date there was no method integrating classroom learning and laboratory works in biochemistry learning implementation and assessment in Indonesia, positioning OD3R against cookbook-dominated laboratory practice
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate chemistry and chemistry education students
Learning Goals¶
- biochemistry concepts (proteins, amino acids, enzymes)
- practical laboratory skills
- scientific attitudes
- laboratory report writing
Claims¶
- Od3R Improves Laboratory Report Writing [+M]
- Od3R Increases Practical Skills [+M]
- Od3R Improves Scientific Attitudes [+M]
