Description¶
Achieve3000® is a supplemental online literacy platform developed and provided by Achieve3000 that delivers differentiated nonfiction reading and writing instruction for learners from preK through grade 12.
Components¶
- Achieve3000® five-step differentiated online literacy routine: Achieve3000® is a supplemental online literacy program providing nonfiction reading content for grades preK–12 that builds "phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills". Teachers assign one article to the whole class while "the program then tailors the version of the article to each student by automatically increasing the difficulty of text when a student is ready for more challenging text". Lessons follow a five-step routine — Before Reading Poll, reading an article, activity questions, After Reading Poll, and a Thought Question — with placement via the LevelSet™ assessment and more than 15,000 nonfiction articles. (What Works Clearinghouse et al. (2018))
- Achieve3000 grade-band program options: Achieve3000 offers "three different program options for students, depending on their grade level": students in grades PreK-2 use Smarty Ants, students in grades 2-5 use KidBiz3000, students in grades 6-8 use TeenBiz3000, and those in grades 9-12 use Empower3000. These variants tailor the same supplemental literacy approach to different grade bands. (Achieve3000 Evidence Rating Summary (2017))
- Achieve3000 leveled-reading program for English Learners: Achieve3000 is a reading-based edtech program piloted in Cajon Valley Unified with 521 elementary and middle school ELs at risk of becoming Long Term English Language Learners. It "provides students with individually-leveled articles that integrate phonics, vocabulary, and fluency practice along with linguistic scaffolds, through a focus on nonfiction science and social studies." It includes an embedded LevelSet Lexile assessment, usage tracking, and professional learning support including modeling blended instruction for educators. (Luke et al. (2017))
- Achieve3000 digital supplemental literacy program for grades 2-12 with grade-level variants: Achieve3000 offers digital, supplemental literacy programs for grades 2-12 with "differentiated content to build student fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing across content areas." The student instructional routine is designed to build literacy capacities and critical thinking skills. Grade-level variants are Smarty Ants (PreK-2), KidBiz3000 (grades 2-5), TeenBiz3000 (grades 6-8), and Empower3000 (grades 9-12). (Achieve3000 (2021))
- Achieve3000 technology requirements: individual device per lesson with optional apps: The program requires "student individual use of a laptop, workstation, Chromebook, or mobile device (such as a tablet) for each lesson." Installing the program itself on the device is not necessary, and apps are offered for Windows, Macs, Chromebooks, iPads, and Android mobile devices so students can use Achieve3000 away from school. (Achieve3000 (2021))
